Using the lines made by ropes, paint, and hoola hoops, students will cement the rules of transversals and parallel lines in an interactive environment. Ropes can also be used for triangle lessons along with a rolling tape measure. Hula Hoops can be used in different sizes for circle lessons.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 100

Classroom make up includes 47% with some form of accommodation required. Activities so far have been with the ropes, paint, and portions of the multi-colored hoops. I adjusted on of the activities away from geometry and used the multi-colored hoops to try new activities to help with combinig like terms. SWD and LQ students showed good growth from VBA 1 to VBA 2. I used the materials more for VBA 3, and the data for this will take some time to be completed. The activity using the grass paint felt impactful and wad fun for the students. On one activity, I painted a huge coordinate plane. Students choose an equation in slope intercept form. they then used the graph and one of the large ropes to help the group graph the line using that form. Having them stand on the graph and 'feel' the y-intercept, I am hoping will keep with them. When bootcamp for PM 3 happens, I will paint a couple of these on the grass. Functions was an issue on the last VBA. I plan to used the hoops to highlight ordered pairs and use the ropes to 'draw' graphs to discuss domain, range, function or not, and the vertical line test with a second rope.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Using the lines made by ropes, paint, and hoola hoops, students will cement the rules of transversals and parallel lines in an interactive environment. Ropes can also be used for triangle lessons along with a rolling tape measure. Hula Hoops can be used in different sizes for circle lessons.

Category

Class Furniture - Carpets, choral risers, transitional seating/desks, etc.

What will be done with my students

GR standards for all grade levels.
6.GR.2.1, 7.GR.1.1 & 1.4, 8.GR.1.1, 1.3, 1.5, and 1.6. All these include solving for area, side lengths of geometric figures, supplementary, complimentary, vertical, and adjacent angles.

Benefits to my students

To keep up with the different needs of students, hands on, kinetic activities are important. Opportunities for students to be outside, active, collecting data, working with partners, etc are critical for adding options to learning. For them and me.

Budget Narrative

Wheel will be to measure lengths of circles and sizes of geometric shapes. Ropes used to make the shapes and lines and transversals. Hoops used to create different sized circles and to mark the different angle relationships for grades 7 and 8. The marking tool and paint will be to make additional geometric shapes for all the activities.

Items

# Item Cost

2 Rope(6) $90.00
3 Exercise Hoops(3) $135.00
4 Marking tool $38.00
5 Paint $45.00
  Total: $350.00
