I am implementing this project to teach students how to make a garden so they can learn how plants grow, and motivate them to eat from nature. I want to spread awareness that we can create our own foods to eat instead of eating packaged foods. Students will learn the hard work and dedication it takes to tend a garden but reap the benefits of the hard work by eating from the harvest.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 100

Wow, what an amazing journey we experienced.  My 3rd and 4th graders worked alongside a UF Master Gardener.  He helped guide our garden by helping us with the crops we needed planted, soil needed, and any tools needed to complete our garden.  It is still a work in progress.   We added more beds as the beds I had are breaking down. We plan to continue the garden throughout the rest of the year and the years ahead.  We planted tomatoes, carrots, onions, radishes, potatoes, beans and corn.  Our radishes were harvested, and the students were able to bring them home to enjoy.  We also harvested the tomatoes.  The plant has been very generous and has allowed for several harvests.  We are ready to pick the carrots.  The potatoes and onions are coming along and should be ready to harvest by May.  The corn hasn’t sprouted.  It may have been bad seeds, or the crows eat the seeds.  We just planted the beans today.  My class as well as myself has learned so much about the garden needs and the time it takes to grow.  I think the students were most excited to try the foods that they grew on their own.  I’ve taken my other classes around the garden to observe the plants that are growing.  It’s gotten them excited to be a gardener in the next years.

What will be done with my students

Students will create a garden by preparing the garden by pulling weeds and preparing the soil. They will spread soil and plant seeds or spouts of different sorts that should be planted due to the seasons. They will plant flowers to encourage bugs to help with pollination. They will water and maintain the garden by pulling weeds as needed, check for pests, and watch and observe as the plants grow. We will harvest and enjoy when ready to do so.

Students will observe plants as they grow.
• SC.3.L.14.1
Describe the structure of plants and how their parts support food production, water and nutrient transport, and reproduction. The major parts of a plant include the stem, leaf, root, flower, seed, and fruit.

Students will observe how plants respond to stimuli as well as pests.
• SC.3.L.14.2
Investigate and describe how plants respond to stimuli like heat, light, and gravity. For example, plant stems grow toward light, and roots grow downward in response to gravity.

Students will observe how different plants grow during different seasons.
• SC.3.L.17.1
Describe how plants and animals respond to changing seasons

Benefits to my students

Students will learn how to grow and maintain a garden. They will learn about the parts of a plant, and how the seasons will affect the plants. Funding will help students to get hands on and create their own garden.

Budget Narrative

The supplies needed may change depending on how the garden is responding. The materials are what we need to jump start our garden.
