Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 39

In August of 2017, 31% of our students scored at or above the 50th percentile on the STAR Reading Assessment.  In May of 2018, 64% of our students scored at or above the 50th percentile on the STAR Reading Assessment.  Our students used these Lenovo laptops to work on areas such as phonics, phonemic awareness, comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary.  They mainly worked on the program Compass Learning, which is connected to the STAR Assessment.  They also read books on their independent reading levels and took Accelerated Reader tests (comprehension tests) and met their goals of 30 points with 80% accuracy.  Our goal at the beginning was for 70% to reach the 50th percentile.  Though we did not meet our goal, we feel that we were successful in more than doubling our number from 31 to 64%.  Our students definitely made progress this year and became better readers with the help/use of these laptops, and they were well- received and greatly appreciated.  The great thing is that we can use the Lenovo laptops for several more years and they will impact our students' achievement.

What will be done with my students

This year, 39 students will be impacted by these laptops, and many other students will be impacted in our future classes. The laptops from this grant will be used for our students to access websites that will enhance their reading abilities. The students will be able to log in Renaissance Learning and take AR (Accelerated Reader) quizzes on books they have read. The students will access Learninga-z.com and read books/complete activities on their level. The students can log into Compass Learning and work on skills that they need to improve upon as prescribed by the STAR Diagnostic Reading Assessment. The students will also log into Moby Max on the laptops and complete more reading practice activities. All of these websites will help our students become proficient in reading.

Benefits to my students

We will base our growth on the STAR Reading Assessment in May of 2018. We will compare the August 2017 score to the May 2018 score. Two teachers and two classes are to be impacted. Teacher A has 19 students. Of those 19, 13 scored below the 50th percentile on the STAR Reading Assessment. Teacher B has 20 students. Of those 20, 14 scored below the 50th percentile.
