Goal

Through our leadership class, we would like to implement the Character Strong Leadership Program. This program will help transform our school culture and climate by promoting positive interactions and relationship skills. The research shows that when a school takes time to cultivate a culture of character and develop social-emotional skills, grades go up and bad behavior goes down. It makes sense - when kids feel safe and supported, they perform better and want to be there. When students learn the value of kindness, service, and empathy, they don't just walk out of school being competent at math and science - they walk away being capable, compassionate people.

What will be done with my students

This national program consists of 25 lessons for each grade at the high school level (9-12). Each lesson is ~30 minutes focused on character development and social-emotional skills with videos, activities, and more. We will use this curriculum in our leadership class to promote a positive school culture throughout the school.

Benefits to my students

Today, more than ever before, we need to promote kindness and a positive school culture. Our leadership students are the elected leaders of the school, and by using this tested Character Strong curriculum with them, I feel we can lead the change at Freeport High School.
