Can you imagine sitting still in the same place for hours at a time? With the use of flexible seating, I want to increase student engagement and take away the feeling of discomfort from sitting in the same spot for an extended period of time. Giving students an option of where they want and how they want to sit will help keep them focused on their work and eliminate the discomfort of having to sit in one spot without the freedom of movement. Students will be able to "get the wiggles out" and focus on what is most important, LEARNING.

Goal

Can you imagine sitting still in the same place for hours at a time? With the use of flexible seating, I want to increase student engagement and take away the feeling of discomfort from sitting in the same spot for an extended period of time. Giving students an option of where they want and how they want to sit will help keep them focused on their work and eliminate the discomfort of having to sit in one spot without the freedom of movement. Students will be able to "get the wiggles out" and focus on what is most important, LEARNING.

What will be done with my students

Giving students an option of how and where to sit will help increase student attention and make them feel more comfortable in their learning environment. These resources will benefit 18 students this year. However, because the seating is reusable year to year, it will continue to benefit classes of students for several years to come. Using flexible seating will benefit students whether they are participating in a whole group lesson or independent work. Young children, especially Kindergarten are only able to stay focused for a brief period of time, giving them increased chances for movement throughout the day will keep them on task and ready to learn.

Benefits to my students

The goal with flexible seating is for student engagement to increase. When students are focused less redirection has to occur. I will be comparing the amount of redirection needed for students before the use of flexible seating compared to the amount of redirection needed after using flexible seating during a typical 30-45 minute lesson. Ideally a student would not need to be redirected more than once during the lesson. The goal for the use of these materials will be for 85% of my 18 students to require no more than 1 redirection during a whole group reading lesson and a whole group math lesson. This will be evaluated using a behavior tracking form.
