Walton Education Foundation

My goal is to increase my student's STAR Reading scores and instilling a love of reading with each of them. I teach intensive reading, according to the latest STAR Reading Assessment, 92% of my students are performing 2 or more grade levels below where they should be. How does one improve their reading? Practice makes perfect. With an increase of classroom books on their reading level that are high interest topics, I know my students will improve their level and I will see an increase in their reading scores. The goal I have set for my students is to have at least 80% of students to grow 1.5 grade levels this year. Students who do not read will not show growth. My goal is to provide students with books that not only interest them, but are on a level they can comprehend, while providing just enough challenge that students’ reading abilities will grow!

Goal

What will be done with my students

My students are “reluctant readers”, meaning they just do not like to read. A lot of this comes from the fact they are assigned books that are too hard for them and they shut down. Also, books that are on their reading level look like little kid books or “baby books”. Having the chance to have a classroom library full of “Hi/Lo” reading materials would give my reluctant readers the chance to read!
If my class is awarded this grant, my students will have the ability to read books that interest them, look like books for their age group, but are on a level they can understand. I would purchase sets of ‘Hi/Lo” books. These books are meant for students in higher grade levels, but they are written at a lower grade level. Hi/Lo books look just like any middle school book, but my students would be able to read, understand, comprehend, and discuss them. My students will gain necessary reading skills in order to be a successful student across all subject areas.

Benefits to my students

Currently I teach 58 “Brick and Mortar” students. These students, who are all reading below grade level will have the chance to use the strategies and skills we learn in class and apply them to reading novels at a more appropriate level for them without the stigma of reading a “baby book”. These books sets are written on their Lexile (reading) level but have topics that interest students at the middle school levels. With the reading practice provided by these Hi/Lo book sets, my goal is to have the majority of my students reading at a year and half higher level than when they started.
