Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 42

I was able to provide flexible seating to my 40+ students during speical education instruction and assessments throughout the school year. I was able to make sure that all my students had the opportunity to chosose the seating that they felt most confortable in and also what they felt helped them to learn and focus the best. It has been interesting to see how students have used different types of flexible seating throughout the entire school year depending on what task they were asked to do. I have seen new students coming in to my classroom get excited about trying out the seating and liking being able to pick for themselves where they want to sit.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to have flexible seating for my special education students to help improve their overall attention and focus.

What will be done with my students

I will use flexible seating with my special education students to help improve their overall attention and focus when working in my classroom on their individual educational goals and doing assessments. When students are working on assignments or taking assessments, they will be able to move more freely to maintain focus. With different seating options, students can choose which seating is best for them based on their needs and how they are feeling that day.

Benefits to my students

Many of my students are diagnosed with ADHD or other learning disabilities which makes it hard for them to work in their general education classroom without small group and movement breaks. They can struggle to sit still during longer assignments and assessments and the flexible seating will give them a chance to move their bodies in a way that is best for them and in turn keep their brain more engaged in the assignment or assessment they are working on. They enjoy learning more and seem to be able to work for longer when they can move their bodies by bouncing or wiggling. I want my students to do the best they can do with what they have and I believe giving more flexible seating will help them to better meet their goals and make progress this school year.
