Goal

Create a classroom library relevant to the 21st century third-grade student.  

What will be done with my students

Students will access the classroom library on a daily basis during our Daily 5 rotation time. Students will spend at least 20 minutes a day reading in our classroom library in order to increase reading stamina. Students will use our classroom library to help them meet their quarterly reading goals as a part of the school Accelerated Reader program. Students will also write in response to their reading (in coordination with the 3rd Grade Florida B.E.S.T Standards) as another part of our Daily 5 rotation time.  

Benefits to my students

Updating my classroom library with relevant literature will increase students' interest in reading. As students read more, they will increase background knowledge, expand vocabulary, improve grammar and writing skills. As a result, students' entire academic performance will improve and "take them to (higher) places". Students will also gain an appreciation for reading as a form of entertainment, relaxation, and an "escape to new places". Lastly, adding culturally responsive literature to the classroom library will build students' global awareness. This will allow student to understand their "place" in the world as well as foster understanding and respect for cultural equity and diversity, or other people and "places". Not only will this year's class benefit from an updated classroom library but so will my third grade classes of the future.
