My goal is to build a collection of high-interest graphic novels, and in turn, get my less enthusiastic readers to love books! Also, graphic novels help autistic students learn about emotions by observing character reactions in the pictures.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 950

The addition of so many well-written and interesting graphic novels has really inspired my students to read more this year!  I noticed an increase in check outs amongst reluctant readers, new readers, and older students who thought reading was not as alluring this year.  The graphic novel shelves were nearly empty all year because that section was so popular.  Many students with special needs found the new books to be easier to read with shorter sentences and bright pictures.  These books even inspired some students to want to be authors!  Three students started creating their very own graphic novels.  I am so grateful for the opportunity to share new books with our students!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to build a collection of high-interest graphic novels, and in turn, get my less enthusiastic readers to love books! Also, graphic novels help autistic students learn about emotions by observing character reactions in the pictures.

What will be done with my students

With a strong graphic novel collection, I can impact any interested student in my school! This would be a permanently integrated, ongoing project that I could build on throughout my tenure. I'm responsible for building quality reading habits that will inspire lifelong learning. Graphic novels motivate even the most resistant readers to pick up a book. Fun stories aside, nearly all graphic novels are Accelerated Reader approved, so students can take comprehension tests to help meet their individual reading goals.

Benefits to my students

Graphic novels are described by some as “bear traps for the reluctant reader.” Graphic novels are a great way, for beginning readers who find the act daunting, to dive in to a story without stress. Hundreds of words on a page can be overwhelming for a child who struggles, but a story told in smaller chunks with pictures that grab your attention have the ability to pull a skeptical student in. Students who are nervous to get a chapter book, can grab a graphic novel and gain confidence in their reading ability. Autistic students can observe the illustrations and learn about emotions and reactions.
