Impact to My Classroom

The Love of Literacy grant that I received has impacted my classroom in so many ways. My students were able to do novel studies with their peers that are on the same reading level with books that they loved! I was able to implement the novel studies with each of my reading groups and have them all reading books that are on their reading level.

The Top Score writing program was AMAZING. I used this to instruct my students explictly on their essay writing. Top Score provides a graphic organizer that is simple and easy to duplicate for any type of essay the students write. The students will be able to use the knowledge gained from top score for years to come.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To enhance student's ability to write grade level essays that include an introduction, three main points and a conclusion.

To spark a love of reading in students while working on comprehension skills through novel studies.

What will be done with my students

Love of Literacy will provide students with the resources and skills they need to become incredible writers, readers, and lifelong learners. The Top Score Writing digital curriculum will allow my students the opportunity to access hundreds of quality writing lessons, games and activities from their own devices. Access to these lessons will give them individualized instructions based on the writing skills that they are lacking and allow me to differentiate my writing instruction.

The novel sets will allow me to use popular books to implement student led novel studies within my classroom. Novels will be assigned to small groups of students based on their reading levels. Each student in the group will have a role within the group that enhances the understanding of vocabulary and grade level standards.

Benefits to my students

The Top Score Writing Digital student and teacher curriculum will not only benefit my students this year but in the years to come. The grade level curriculum will enhance students writing skills while ensuring that they have mastered basic writing elements that are needed in years to come. Providing students with such a strong writing background will allow them to be successful as the continue their education. The curriculum explicitly addresses essay writing and all elements that are required to write a strong essay.

The novel sets will allow students to work collaboratively in small groups to deepen their understanding of novels while allowing them the opportunity to develop a love of reading alongside of their peers.
