Walton Education Foundation

Our school prides itself on challenging our students to be creative thinkers, analytical problem solvers and to provide them the ability to solve higher-order thinking questions throughout educational endeavors. Providing students with STEM containers will provide them opportunities to exercise their thinking strategies, thus, developing higher-order questioning and problem-solving skill sets. These skill sets will be beneficial as they retain hands on application of problem- solving techniques. Providing this opportunity will benefit the student both immediate and long term.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 36

The outcome we achieved with the STEM bins was phenomenal. The students enjoyed using the STEM bins as extra support for the science and math standards. Some of the activities included log building, building geometrical shape designs, building designs with legos, investigating math learning centers including elapsed time, understanding fractions, graphing, adding, subtracting and multiplying.

Proficiency rate for the students on science standards at the beginning of the year hovered around 70%. Currently, the proficiency rate of the students is around 90%. This can be attributed to students manipulating and exploring with the purchased STEM bins.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our school prides itself on challenging our students to be creative thinkers, analytical problem solvers and to provide them the ability to solve higher-order thinking questions throughout educational endeavors. Providing students with STEM containers will provide them opportunities to exercise their thinking strategies, thus, developing higher-order questioning and problem-solving skill sets. These skill sets will be beneficial as they retain hands on application of problem- solving techniques. Providing this opportunity will benefit the student both immediate and long term.

What will be done with my students

The outcomes achievable for my 36 students are limitless by connecting the elements of surveying, questioning and researching to embody STEM activities. The students will be able to enjoy learning and discovery with materials purchased to jumpstart not only their inquisitive minds but science standards used to deliver lessons daily. I plan on providing daily activities for the 2022-2023 school year with these STEM containers to help reinforce all aspects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics - core lessons for young learners.

Anticipated materials will be used daily in activities designed to help prepare students for FAST mainstreaming and hands-on experiences. Research proves engagement with practice and time devoted to STEM materials daily boosts proficiency in the science and math content areas. Proficiency rate for the students on science standards at beginning of the year hovered around 70%. The proficiency rate of students can be greatly increased by the acquisition of the STEM material used to manipulate and explore STEM topics.

If this grant is awarded, students would have classroom sets to practice, brainstorm, research and solve Science Curriculum skills. These boxed sets of both math and science manipulatives will provide not only experimentation but tools needed to foster future FAST assessments.

Benefits to my students

Currently, I have no STEM sets to generate that quest to explore and problem solve when I introduce science lessons. I have few science manipulatives to jumpstart my students' understanding of being science savvy. These materials are needed to not only meet proficiency standards but also create lifelong learners broadening their minds and solidifying science standards being taught. STEM sets will remain in the classroom for students to exercise their inquisitive quests daily and will be used for future students for years to come. By the end of the year, 80% of these second-grade students will be mastering science standards with the help of hands-on manipulatives to foster their daily learning. This will be measured by student test scores and student participation.
