Goal

Our goal is to continue our Merit store success. This grant will provide tangible items for students to spend their merits on, and fulfill the promise of a school wide reward system. Our students rely on and count on the school store each Friday, they work hard each day to have a chance to celebrate their short term and long term behavior goals. The school store is critical for our school wide behavior system success.

What will be done with my students

Our school based behavior system gives students a method to earn merits. Students can 'spend' their merits each Friday at our school store. Items such as soda and chips are available, which are donated by community members; however when we surveyed our students, they communicated some choices that they would like to see in the school store. In effect, each item becomes a behavior goal. If students see items in the store they will work for those items. They will make conscious positive choices in classrooms and earn merits. Then they can spend those merits on items in the store. Working for those items is based on positive behavior choices and our 10 key principles: compassion, accountability, desire, effort, esteem, determination, initiative, time, victory and respect. As a result our referrals have decreased by 90% over the past year. Additionally, students help manage, restock, organize and inventory items in the store. The store is a cultural linchpin for our students. The school store is a short term goal which leads to long term gains.

Benefits to my students

Positive behavior support system are researched based and have a long track record of changing behavior. Our school store is a part of our culture. Our student's benefit from this grant in numerous ways:
1. Their voice and opinion matter
2. Faculty get a clear understanding of student needs outside of school (based on the items wanted into the store i.e. fishing pole)
3.Students benefit from developing saving skills - they can bank their merits and experience delayed gratification
4. Faculty uses this information to develop real and lasting relationships with each student
5. The merit and demerit system is integrated with an online platform called Liveschool and students can monitor their merits and demerits in real time.
6. Monitoring merits through Liveschool gives students increased chances for self-control (saving merits for larger items)
6. Parents have access to their child's Liveschool account and can monitor their progress, monitor what their child bought in the store, and monitor any area of improvement.

Budget Narrative

All items from this budget come directly from student surveys and open responses to the survey. The number next to each item is the quantity. Item 25 (EUREKA Rolling Cart) is critical for displaying school store items. All items purchased with merits are logged into the online system at time of purchase allowing for an instant view of all items purchased, by which student and on which day. This information is also sent in real time to parents, so they can have a clear understanding of what items their child has purchased with merits. Lastly, vendor for all items is Amazon and total does not include shipping.
