The way to get kids to read and love it is to let them choose their own books, in their own interest level. Recent reports from varied studies found that children's reading for pleasure outside school had a significant impact on their educational attainment.
After reading Wimpy Kids books, my students will be able to answer Accelerated Reader questions (A.R. quiz) with 80% accuracy in 4/5 trials.
Students will have the opportunity to take home and read the entire Wimpy Kids book series. After reading their book, students will complete an Accelerated Reader Quiz to check their comprehension.
Literacy is NO longer an option in the classrooms or outside of them. The single most important part of education is literacy. It is essential for learning. Having access to developmentally appropriate books and being read aloud to early and often, are two of the most important factors in early brain development and early literacy development. Unfortunately a large percentage of children, especially in Title I schools - such as Dania Elementary, come from low-income homes and families. These children do not have books at home and whose parents do not read to them on a regular basis.
Having additional books in our class will benefit 100% of all of my students. I will be able to measure the impact/outcomes of the program - because by the end of the year students will demonstrate at least 30% reading improvement in their weekly assessments gained through substantial amounts of daily reading in their homes.
