I realized my students are not getting as much quality, on-level, independent reading time as I would like.
To increase reading stamina, fluency and comprehension, I want to incorporate Ereaders with a Reading Journal and task cards.

What will be done with my students

Students will use Ereaders as part of a Reading Center and class projects. I would like to incorporate Ereaders into our Daily Five. The Daily 5 is a series of literacy tasks which students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers with individuals. The Daily 5 is more than a management system or a curriculum framework – it is a structure that will help students develop the daily habits of reading, writing and working with peers that will lead to a lifetime of independent literacy. During the reading/center time the kids choose one of the daily 5 rotations (read to self, read with someone, work on writing, listen to reading, working with words) while the teacher meets with small groups (guided reading or strategy) or holds individual conferences. Ereaders can be used for any of the above mentioned:read to self, read with someone, work on writing (as they can take notes and write about what was read), listen to reading (with test talk feature), and work with word as Apps can be loaded on the device.

Benefits to my students

With Ereaders such as a Kindle, students can access features that allow them to interact with text differently than they can with printed books. These include listening to text as they read, making notes, highlighting text, looking up words, bookmarking pages, and adjusting font sizes. Students increase their reading stamina which in turn helps improve their reading fluency and reading comprehension skills.
