Pre-school children are ready to learn about the everyday world. Young children are highly engaged when they have the opportunity to explore. They create strong and enduring mental representations of what they have experienced in investigating the everyday world. They readily acquire vocabulary to describe and share these mental representations and the concepts that evolve from them. Science gives the students a hands-on learning approach with literacy components. This also incorporates parental involvement and support. When parents get involved in a preschoolers education, they get a better sense of what goes on in the program. The science experiments will be done at school and then recreated at home. The students will be given a packet to take home with the instructions for the parents to duplicate the science experiment.
The students will discover, explore and investigate by using the scientific method. This program correlates with the Broward County Schools philosophy of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). The students have common core learning in Science with "hands-on learning." Children’s natural interests in science can be the foundation for developing literacy and language. The students will do a science experiment and then the same experiment will go home. The instructions and materials will be included so the child and parent can participate in a learning experience at home. The child can actually teach the parent what they have learned at school.
The students will learn the scientific method and use scientific inquiry skills. They will learn characteristics of living and non-living things. They will demonstrate knowledge of the physical properties of objects and materials. They will use tools and technology. The students will be developing social skills as they work in collaborative teams and partnerships to do their experiments. Literacy and literature are also the foundation to the experiments. The students learn and read about their lessons prior to conducting their experiment. They build prior knowledge The program's essential philosophy is to have parental involvement and support.
The budget includes basic safety devices and items necessary to do the experiments at school and then to be repeated at home.
