Goal

Using a colorful partition system to maintain controlled learning environments, youngest public school learners, 3-5 year olds with developmental delays in a self-contained ESE classroom, will work daily in small groups with teacher, speech language pathologist and other related service providers. They will become more focused, transition between directed activities more readily and progress more steadily throughout the year on kindergarten readiness and IEP goals.

What will be done with my students

Students will learn over time with daily repetition to follow a color system and procedure to move within their teacher directed areas partitioned with red, yellow and blue 48-inch high right angle dividers for differentiated small group learning. When they have completed their three learning groups they will choose between two self-directed activities that are partitioned with the green dividers. The students will complete non-preferred activities before choosing preferred activities. This will help them learn self-control and practice following procedures. The teacher, paraprofessional, speech language pathologist, occupational therapist and/or physical therapist will engage groups simultaneously in a learning activity specific to the students' needs. Colorful partitions will help students understand where to go to the next activity as well as clearly define the area where they are expected to remain.

Benefits to my students

All three to five year old children have difficulty with impulsivity and attention span. The students with special needs in my classroom, due to their developmental delays, find it even harder to learn in traditional ways. Designing an environment with colored partitions for activities will remove an enormous barrier to their learning, easy distractibility. Students will get the necessary multiple opportunities to practice following directions and procedures as well as gain sufficient exposure to concept knowledge and kindergarten readiness skills without teacher needing to focus excessively on managing undesirable behaviors. Colorful partitions for learning groups have multiple benefits. They will help the students focus, increase their time on task, and learn social skills while making positive behavioral choices.

Budget Narrative

Three panels will be used for learning centers (red, yellow and blue). Two green panels will be used to section off child-directed available choice centers. Cantilever legs will provide stability yet can be removed for stacking units.
