Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

I can barely use words to give justice to how thankful my students and I are to have received your generous donations. There is nothing that my students enjoy more than reading everyday, and having this listening center has generated so much daily excitement -- it is amazing to see! The tools that you have funded will allow my students to enjoy a wide range of books and activities. Thank you so much for helping to fund this project, because it will give my students the chance to work hard on the basics of their second language (English) in order to grow and improve themselves as readers and leaders. We use this center every single day during guided reading, and I have seen so much improvement this year! My students adore the books. I do as many read-a-louds with my students as possible, and they are incredibly engaged. They love these non-fiction and fiction texts, and the Doctor Seuss books in particular are a huge hit! Every day during the rotation to the listening center my students spend every second they can curled up on a pillow exploring the world around them through these books -- they are on grade level, have rich illustrations, and give my students exposure to so much they have never seen before. Nearly every day they come to me filled with excitement, wanting to share what they learned during their listening time. I want to again deeply thank you for helping to provide my students with these enriching materials. You are helping to cultivate a life-long love of reading, thank you so much for your support!! With gratitude, Ms. Leatherbarrow

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to strengthen the listening skills of my students. My aim is to increase listening skills in the following ways: increasing independence, widening exposure to various types of story structures, and having a structured time to listen to appropriately modeled fluency and phrasing.

What will be done with my students

Each day my 1st grade scholars have literacy centers, and I want to include a listening center in this rotation. Many of my young scholars speak English as their second language, with Spanish being the primary language spoken at home. This makes reading difficult, as they are trying to learn a new language along with learning to read. A listening center will allow students to use books on CD and independently access stories. Hearing and understanding fluent reading is an essential pre-literacy skill. Having a physical copy of the text will allow students to develop concepts of print (tracking text, turning pages, etc). They will have the chance to listen, respond, retell, make connections, make predictions, and identify story elements.

Benefits to my students

My scholars will use the listening center to enhance their reading experience. Listening to stories helps build the confidence they need to read on their own and helps them identify unknown words in a non-threatening way. My students will benefit greatly from these resources: they will have books to listen to on CD that are tailored to their reading levels and specific needs, they will have increased exposure to a variety of genres, and have access to higher level texts. This listening center will foster their independence and their listening skills.

Budget Narrative

This request includes one metal listening center that has space to hold books, a CD player, and CDs. I have also requested CDs, books, and related activities that target building fluency and vocabulary. I have requested one CD player and four headphones.
