Travis Hill Jr. - $210.00
The goal of my request is to engage struggling readers in a historical novel. The Red Umbrella tells the story of the Peter Pan Project through the eyes of a likable young narrator.
With this novel study, students will explore many literary elements such as point of view, cause and effect, problem and solution, and have the opportunity to explore the author's descriptive language as it is used throughout the novel. Students will explore the history of Cuba and learn how the Peter Pan Project affected the lives of so many children and adults. Through the novel study students will read, explore, act, sing, dance, analyze and create. This novel allows for students to experience many exciting, cultural and historical activities and lessons. The novel will be used with all students in my language arts classes. This novel goes along with and can be studied with another novel (The Color of My Words) that is currently part of our curriculum. Comparing and contrasting two texts will allow students to practice many skills needed to be successful readers.
Students will complete before, during, and after reading activities while studying the novel. They will be guided through questions, literary elements, group work, and projects. The novel will be read by approximately 70 students. The students will benefit from learning important history while being engaged by a novel that is captivating and creative. The novel has won many awards and is a best seller for young adults. The class set of novels can be shared with other language arts teachers at my school. When students are engaged in reading everyone benefits!
The budget covers the cost of a class set of novels. The novel costs $6.99 per novel. This budget is based on the price through Barnes and Noble Bookstore.
