Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant is to provide our 5th grade teachers access to rich literature for their entire classrooms. If these class sets of 30 chapter books were provided, our teachers could teach literature through novel studies.

What will be done with my students

Currently students are reading chapters or sections of great literature in their Core Reading Text books. While these experiences are great and would continue, I would love for our students to experience entire pieces of literature. With this grant, teachers will have access to 30 copies of the same text, so that every student in the class can hold and read the same text at the same time. When the text is completed in one room, it can be checked out again in another classroom. It would become a school-wide resource used by 4 fifth grade classrooms of approximately 85 students.

Benefits to my students

Reading an entire book as a class will expose students to the joy literature can bring. With the teacher there to guide the students with deeper thinking and collaboration during their reading, these books will bring an opportunity for our students to succeed in becoming critical thinkers while reading.

Budget Narrative

Each of the books selected have lessons provided in CPALMS which have been vetted and aligned to our Florida Standards or come with a teacher guide called a Novel-Tie. The books would be a teaching tool for mastering the standards at the 5th grade level. Books have been selected based on appropriate 5th grade reading levels (Fountas and Pinnel T, U and V).
