Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 115

This grant went a long way in helping students to not only internalize the learning goal of life cycles, but gave them hands on interactions with the life cycle of a butterfly. The students were so excited to come into the classroom each morning to observe and record the progress of the life cycle of our butterflies.

Our students loved watching the newly emerged butterflies feasting on the oranges that we had placed in the butterly habitat. It was both a sad and exciting day when we released our butterflies into our Global Garden at Avalon. The students delighted in watching the once encaged butterflies being released and fly away to begin the next step of their life cycle.

This grant ensured that all of the second grade students were able to oberve, record and be a part of the life cycle of the butterfly.

Their new journey

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is for the second grade students to witness the life cycle of the butterfly.

What will be done with my students

Students will research butterflies and find out what kinds of butterflies there are. They will also research what they eat and where they live. We will set up a butterfly garden in each second grade classroom. The students will witness the caterpillar building its cocoon and then coming out into a butterfly. They will also learn what butterflies eat and will release the butterflies into our Global Garden when the butterflies are ready. Students will track the progress of their butterfly garden in their Science journal.

Benefits to my students

This will benefit the students by giving them the responsibility of taking care of the caterpillars and eventually butterflies. Students will learn the life cycle of the caterpillar and how they become butterflies!

Budget Narrative

Our Second grade classrooms each have a butterfly habitat cage. This grant will supply each classroom with 10 caterpillars, a mister, butterfly feeder, eye dropper, and coloring pages for each student. All students will observe and record the complete life cycle of the butterfly.
