Goal

To combine Science and Literacy:
* providing an engaging opportunity for students to take a
closer look at science subjects
* students taking a closer look at their thoughts by
reflecting on the book
* students peer into their classmates' thoughts by reading
and responding to their journal entries

What will be done with my students

Students will:
1. Take a backpack home for the week. The student reads the book. They add their thoughts about the book into the continuous journal.
2. The student reads what other students have written in the journal. They compare and contrast their thoughts with their classmates' ideas.
3. The student replies to a classmate in the journal.

Benefits to my students

The take home backpacks will be unique and motivating to 3rd grade students. Their background knowledge of science will increase The students will also be exposed to their classmates' reflections and may see science in a new light. Eventually, with this science knowledge, students will be better environmental citizens in the 3rd grade and beyond!

Budget Narrative

I already have 20 book bags that were donated to me from The Education Foundation's school supplies. The journals will have printed labels designating them as belonging to the Book Bags. The books will be ordered from Barnes and Noble (with an Educator Discount) and/or Amazon. When available, the books were ordered in hardcover form to survive the many trips to and from school.
