My goal is to provide students with math games that engage them in real world problem solving situations as well as other hands on activities. With the use of these activities, my hope is that my students will have more of a desire to embrace math and develop a new way of thinking about problems.
Throughout the year, the materials provided by the grant will allow students to practice and reinforce foundational math skills and apply their knowledge in new ways. Once a concept is introduced and taught the activities that correspond with the learning goal(s) for that week will be placed into a center for students to use. Students will be able to have fun with their peers while at the same time developing and reinforcing key concepts. They will have the opportunity to play fast paced bingo games, work on critical thinking skills by playing ‘Smath – the game of Scrabble with a math twist, as well as, choose to work independently or in pairs using the math discovery cans that equip them with the right manipulatives and self-checking activity cards to tackle math in a flash!
As well students will be able to clearly see how math is used in our everyday life by using what they have learned and applying their knowledge to real world math problems they’ll encounter every day —from paying restaurant bills to calculating prices using fractions & decimals, followed by interpreting location as well as calculating distance by making conversions using real road maps. These real world problem-solving experiences will include looking at math in a whole new way. Students will get the opportunity to see math played out in the real world. For example, students will plan a road trip across American, learn more about the game of baseball, calculating the best deals with the use of coupons and store sales when going to the mall, and planning a party! All of the activities will be use throughout the year and will be made accessible to all fourth grade classrooms to enjoy.
These center activities will help challenge students to go beyond the right answer in math and they’ll build problem-solving skills. These activities get students thinking about how they arrived at an answer and how they can apply their strategy elsewhere.
