Goal

To give students more creativity and control when working on digital design projects on the computer. The only way that students can draw on the computer now is by moving the mouse; this is not the best way for students to draw on the computer. By using a bamboo pen tablet the students can replicate drawing digitally. Using a bamboo tablet also allows the students to see different ways technology can be used in the classroom. Many professional designers use these tablets so it would be providing the latest technology to our students.  

What will be done with my students

I will have the bamboo tablets installed on six of the computers that students will be able to use. All students will be introduced and taught how to use the tablets. When the students have to design their own projects in digital design the students will have the option to use the bamboo tablet instead of just using the mouse. When the students use the tablet for their designs it can replicate pencils, chalks, oils and watercolors as you move the Bamboo pen naturally across the tablet. The tablet is an ideal way to explore students interests, with a premium feel of drawing. The students will be ready to explore their artistic side let their creativity flow with this Pen Tablet. 

Benefits to my students

Pen tablets offers a whole new way to work on your computer, with great options for activities like photography, art and sketching, digital inking. In my digital design class we use the software Adobe® Photoshop® and that software recognizes when you’re using a Wacom pen and delivers important capabilities you wouldn’t have otherwise. The pressure-sensitive pens are recognized in the two dozen or more tools and brushes in Photoshop (the list is growing with each release). From the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush to Layer Masks and Adjustment Layers, you can dynamically adjust color temperature, exposure, tone, contrast, and most other features, all by how lightly or firmly you press your pen to the tablet. Your creative edits and enhancements will look more natural and organic using a pressure-sensitive pen. Making selections and editing along the natural contours of an image are some of the toughest things to master in Photoshop. However, with the tablet it feels natural, much more like the students are working directly on the image. The students will work faster and with much more control. Using a pen tablet will makes it easy to mask specific areas of an image and control the opacity of the blend by pressing harder or lighter with the pen tip. The results you achieve are authentic, natural, and organic-looking. The same results are extremely difficult and time-consuming to achieve without pressure-sensitivity and the direct-on-image feel of a pen tablet. That is why most people in the design industry use these devices and why the students in this career class should experience the use of these devices if they want to go on and pursue a career in the industry.
