Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

My Goal for the project was for all the students to become a published author. I wanted each book to be meaningful and something that they would hold onto and cherish for years to come. We started by learning about morals and lessons and examined many books that taught a lesson. We also listened to stories that taught lessons. Each student was put into a group and was given a lesson to teach the class. They had to then develop a play that went with the lesson they were teaching. Through these activities the students were exposed to all of the elements it takes to write and publish a story that teaches a lesson. From there they had to pick and write their own stories including developing characters and setting of the story. All stories had to be edited by peers and typed into the computer. Then, they got to start the exciting part of gluing their story into a book and illustrating it too! The students truly treasure their books and have learned many valuable lessons along the way!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to have all my students experience what it is like to become a published author and illustrator.

What will be done with my students

Each student in my classroom will be given a blank 28 page book that they will turn into their own masterpiece. The students will explore the many life lessons that books can teach us. From there they will pick their own theme for their book. For example, a theme could be about friendship, what to do with bullies, overcoming fears, or simply showing how practice makes perfect. The students will go step by step though the writing process including the best part, being able to publish and illustrate their own book! Books will be shared with the entire school and be available for check out in the library complete with their own Reading Counts test.

Benefits to my students

All the students at Pelican Marsh will be able to learn valuable life lessons, not only through the writing process but also though the important life lessons that each of the books teach. Many of the 3rd grade Language Arts standards will be taught and mastered during this publishing process.

Budget Narrative

I attended the grant writing class on Thursday, August 6th. I think that this project will deeply benefit my whole class and touch many others at Pelican Marsh.
