Goal

To add mid-scale harmonies to our existing steel drum band, aptly named the "Calypso Kids"

To demonstrate the excitement of creating harmonies within our musical performances

To provide our at-risk population of students with the benefits CONTINUITY and FAMILIARITY with POSITIVE PARTICIPATORY experiences in their lives. 

What will be done with my students

Students will learn a repertoire of Caribbean songs from the basic Jumbie Jam songbook on the set of mid-scale steel drums.
Students will join our existing group of soprano and bass steel drums and perform for the school and various community venues. This group already has an established name, and is in their 3rd year! 

Benefits to my students

We will build upon our Caribbean performing group. The "Calypso Kids" performed at the Golden Apple awards last year, at the Naples Music Club Anniversary Festival, and in concert at their home school. They are learning about harmonies in music, and will appreciate the addition of the mid-scale component.

Last year's performance for the Naples Music Club was so impressive that it resulted in our school being supplied with violins for a 2 year pilot program! The benefits are innumerable, but the most important benefit is the enhancement of the students' self images/concepts! 

Budget Narrative

The price of a set of mid-scale steel drums varies with the quality of the drums. This is basically an entry level set, appropriate for Elementary students to create a wonderful tone quality in their harmonies.
