Lucie Jenny MacCarthy Music Fund - The Community Foundation of Collier County - $1,169.62
To EXPAND last year's generous grant outcome by continuing to address various learning styles with keyboard lessons focusing on language and literacy. Some students will be in their 2ND year of basic piano lessons!
Students in grades 2-5 will use the piano (keyboard) lab to develop playing skills with simple songs and nursery rhymes. They will then visit the K and grade 1 classrooms as 'Little Mozarts', and assist the teacher in curricular goals related to language acquisition and literacy through accompanied 'sing-alongs' with the children.
Students from the keyboard (piano) lab will also play in groups together, focusing on concepts such as melody, harmony, rhythm, and counterpoint.
"Little Mozarts" may also be featured performers in the cafeteria at lunchtime, on the school news program, or at PTO meetings or other school functions. At end of school year, they will participate in a RECITAL for their friends and relatives.
Research suggests that music activities improve a 4 yr. old child's memory, cognitive development, learning skills, and ability to express emotion. It teaches self-control, improves physical coordination, enhances creativity, and builds social skills such as cooperation. For the older children, the benefits are the same as above, with the addition of pattern perception improvement through exposure to rhythm and repetition in the performed music. Pattern perception is related to critical math skill development.
The keyboards are priced through 'Music is Elementary'.
