My goal is to provide my students the opportunity to learn better organizational skills that will assist them throughout their school career. This life skill is so important and needs to be taught at an early age. By using their seat sacks, students will be organized and ready to begin lessons immediately. Downtime is reduced. I have seen seat sacks used in other classrooms and would love to give my students the opportunity to learn improved organizational skills.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 18

My goal was to provide my students the opportunity to learn better organizational skills that will assist them throughout their school career. This life skill is very important and needs to be taught at an early age. I learned that once the students received the seat sacks they needed reminders as to what things they keep in it. Their desks are now better organized. The best part is the students know where their journals are and where their books are and time spent on finding books has been reduced. I have gained a few minutes of learning time during the day and this translates into hours of extra teaching time per year! The only adjustments that I have made were in the end of the day procedures. They no longer walk around the classroom to stack their chairs. They stack their chair on their desk which has also saved time.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to provide my students the opportunity to learn better organizational skills that will assist them throughout their school career. This life skill is so important and needs to be taught at an early age. By using their seat sacks, students will be organized and ready to begin lessons immediately. Downtime is reduced. I have seen seat sacks used in other classrooms and would love to give my students the opportunity to learn improved organizational skills.

What will be done with my students

After modeling the correct use of seat sacks, the students will learn the benefits of staying organized by having their interactive notebooks (one for math, science & social studies, language arts, and writing) in one place. When it is time for lessons in a specific curricular area, the students will take out the appropriate notebook from their seat sack and be ready to begin the lesson immediately. The students quickly learn the benefits of being organized.

Benefits to my students

I have observed the benefits of using seat sacks in other classrooms. In addition to cutting down on time off task spent searching for the appropriate book, it has helped to increase the students’ ability to organize materials and their sense of responsibility in taking care of their materials. Students truly come to know what they need and where to get the supplies quickly. Books, papers and other materials stored in desks often become ripped and/or crumpled. Frustration sets in when needed items are "lost" or stuffed in the back of the desk. With the seat sack, students stay organized and valuable time is not lost searching for the needed materials.

Budget Narrative

The budget items are for non-consumable seat sacks. These seat sacks are made with sturdy fabrics, are washable, and will be used for years to come.
