Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
Suncoast Credit Union Foundation - $2,000.00
Students will gain hands-on, real-world, authentic job skills in graphic layout and design and sign making. Students will also learn basic fundamentals of running a small business.
Students will learn how to navigate the software that runs the vinyl cutter as well as how to operate the cutter. We will also learn the steps of how to take a raw graphic and prepare it to be applied to the target surface. Students will explore creating signs on a number of different surfaces such as walls, coraplast, banners, and other mediums. Students will choose a name for the microbusiness, create both video and print advertisements, and market the business to teachers and parents. They will then take orders for specific graphics, create them, deliver and install in classrooms if need be, then collect fees. Students will be responsible for tracking sales, income, and expenses. They will also take on the tasks of tracking inventory and ordering supplies as needed. Soft job skills such as customer service, initiative, critical thinking, communication skills, adaptability, project management, dependability, punctuality, problem solving, emotional control, and a strong work ethic will be instilled in each student.
Many of the students in this program have emotional/behavior disorders and may not graduate with a regular diploma. This business venture will teach them relevant skills that can be applied in a job in the workforce once they leave high school. The project will also be used as an incentive for good behavior with time spent “on the job” when appropriate behavior is exhibited. Academic content such as math skills, writing, and technology skills are all required to operate the vinyl cutter and will be enforced which will aid students in their academic courses. Having to conduct business with our staff members and parents will provide students with an opportunity to build interpersonal skills and make them an integral part of our school culture. This venture will build confidence, pride, and self-esteem in students who rarely find anything worth acknowledging in their lives.
Finally, the microbusiness is aligned with the district’s IncubatorEdu program and career readiness initiatives
