Students will interact with residents of an extended-care facility to promote awareness of developing an understanding of how to be respectful and responsible to all generations. The students will sing songs that will introduce them to an extended opportunity to appreciate different types of music and learn how to be involved in their community by reaching out to these senior citizens. Classroom Teacher will ask assistance from the Music Teacher and they will collaborate and work together to produce two performances and encourage the extended-care facility residents to sing along with the students. Communication will be promoted throughout the year as we all become 'buddies'.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 16

The students were able to share their musical talent by singing a variety of songs on two separate occasions.  They really enjoyed the conversations with their "Senior Buddies" and discovered that they actually had ideas and interests that were very much alike.  Due to the generosity of Dolly Bodick, we were able to make two trips to The Chateau.  The students were so excited to see their buddies for a second time.  They were especially excited to go to Music Class each week and share ideas and practice songs with the Music Teacher.  They developed a keen interest in music because the trips gave them a purpose for singing.  A personal touch was making cards for each trip to their "Senior Buddy" from their "Junion Buddy".  Parents remarked what a meaningful event and that their students really looked forward to the trips.  Even though they are very young, they still can be a part of their community.  Students made special gifts for their buddies and thanks to our donor's generosity, we were able to make enough for every resident we contacted, including the residents in physical therapy.  Mrs. Jensen and I truly look forward to collaborating and watching the students grow with their musical talent from the first visit to the second visit.  We were able to develop a close relationship between the students and residents and really enjoyed watching the residents sing along when they recognized a song.  The seniors' smiles and the students' smiles were "priceless".  Thank you.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students will interact with residents of an extended-care facility to promote awareness of developing an understanding of how to be respectful and responsible to all generations. The students will sing songs that will introduce them to an extended opportunity to appreciate different types of music and learn how to be involved in their community by reaching out to these senior citizens. Classroom Teacher will ask assistance from the Music Teacher and they will collaborate and work together to produce two performances and encourage the extended-care facility residents to sing along with the students. Communication will be promoted throughout the year as we all become 'buddies'.

What will be done with my students

Students have been invited after last year's performances and have requested continuing contact as 'buddies'. Students will learn and practice an around-the-world theme of music utilizing customs not only from the United States, but from other countries as well. The students will be making a construction type of ornament representing 2nd grade and LOE to present to the residents. In years past, students are also requested upstairs in the rehab section to perform a seond time. They will also make a card for the resident to keep when they meet one of the residents personally. They will be paired up with a resident and will introduce themselves and share their gifts. Students will keep in touch by sending letters and cards throughout the year. An additional trip will be planned later in the year.

Benefits to my students

I feel this will benefit the students and residents by showing a different perspective of relationships among people. Most Florida students do not have much contact with older generations. The residents do not have much contact with the younger generation and both groups can share some of their experiences. The students will have a better understanding of what it takes to be a good citizen and experience how they can actually become involved in their community. This goes along with the Social Studies lessons we are learning regarding good citizenship and communities.
The music teacher and classroom teacher will have a great opportunity to collaborate, work, and plan together to provide this learning lesson and experience.
For two years, we have interacted with the residents and they had the experience of writing a reflection on their visit and how they felt about their 'adopted' residents.

Budget Narrative

A school bus will be needed to travel to The Moorings as it is quite a distance from LOE. A substitute will be needed to cover the music classes while the music teacher is gone. All handmade items will have materials supplied by the teacher such as construction paper.
