Goal

To provide necessary STEM resources and materials to students grades K-5.

What will be done with my students

Highlands Elementary School's STEM lab offers students weekly and bi-weekly visits for hands-on labs that integrate the various components of science, technology, engineering, and math while also supporting the LAFS, MAFS, and Sunshine State Science standards. We are lucky to have a fully stocked lab with laptops, Vernier probe ware, microscopes, and traditional science equipment like beakers, flasks, and test tubes. In addition to the lab, Highlands began hosting STEM Tuesdays last year. These days allow each grade level a STEM day lesson and activity on a rotational basis throughout the year in addition to lab visits. Both the STEM lab and our STEM days require additional materials and resources that are not always found in the lab. For example, for our first Fifth Grade STEM Tuesday challenge, they learned about catapults and then synergized with a team to design their own catapult. This activity required foam cups, plastic spoons, rubber bands, popsicle sticks, and marshmallows. As we look ahead to future STEM labs and STEM days, there will be various materials and resources needed to provide these STEM opportunities to our students. Below are some titles of upcoming STEM challenges for our students:
4th grade-Robot Man
3rd grade-Flower Power
2nd grade-Spoon Towers
1st grade-Constellation Creations
Kinder-Blow and Go

Benefits to my students

Highlands Elementary services students of low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Many students come to school with limited background knowledge or life experiences. STEM labs and STEM days provide hands-on, engaging, empowering, and enriching opportunities that build science, technology, engineering, and math skills that are critical for our current competitive, global society. As a section of our vision states, "All students are challenged to reach their maximum potential by learning a solid foundation of academic life and leadership skills. This foundation enables each student to become successful in a 21st century world." It is our hope that the STEM lab and STEM days will provide valuable, unique opportunities for students to build their academic, leadership, and critical thinking skills that will positively influence their current and future lives.
