Goal

The goal of this project is to show the real world applications of physics, engineering, and statistics in a fun and engaging way. Students in the Physics and Engineering classes will analyze how these principles come together through an in-depth analysis of Nerf Toy Dart Launchers.

What will be done with my students

Students in the Introduction to Engineering Design and Principles of Engineering courses (100 students total) will use the NERF toy dart launchers for the Introduction to Statistics component of their courses. Students will use the dart launchers to measure the distances from several angles and calculate the Mean, Median, Mode and Standard Deviation of the launches. Students will then compare their results with other groups to determine which has the highest accuracy and precision.

Students in the Physics I and AP Physics I courses (40 students total) will use the NERF toy dart launchers as a culminating project for their Work & Energy unit. Students will build an apparatus that uses digital Photogates, Force Sensors, and scales to determine the velocity and kinetic energy of the darts. Students will then mathematically determine the stored energy inside the spring, the work done, and the total mechanical energy of the system. Students will then present their apparatus and results to the class.

Benefits to my students

The majority of students are familiar with the NERF brand of toy dart launchers and this project will give them an engaging look at how the concepts used in class are applied to everyday items. Additionally, since the toy dart launchers apply multiple engineering and physics principles, it allows students to combine their knowledge in a culminating project, as opposed to learning each topic separately.

Budget Narrative

A variety of types of dart launchers were chosen so that each group will have different and unique results to analyze and present to the class.

Items

# Item Cost
1 4 Small NERF dart launchers at $9.99 each $40.00
2 3 Medium NERF dart launchers at $14.99 each $60.00
