Goal

The goal of this grant is to empower all my students to reach their highest potentials. This project will allow my students to hear discussions and explanations one more time, even when I am not available. Students will be able to tap on a word or a diagram in the special notebook and be able to review what was said previously about it. They will be able to hear an explanation as if I was standing right in front of them. With the Livescribe Echo Smartpen, students will be able to have directions repeated, vocabulary clarified, or information reiterated. This pen will increase students' independence and allow them to keep working without my immediate assistance. Since they will be able to proceed without me at their side, they will become more accountable for their learning.  

What will be done with my students

As a resource teacher for English Language Learners, my students face many challenges that are magnified by a language barrier. To overcome the language barrier, these students must work harder than other students. Using a Livescribe Echo Smartpen can make a significant difference in a student's learning potential. An audio recording of a lesson or oral reading has clarity. The student can listen and then record a timed reading to practice fluency (the rate at which a student reads). The student would also be able to dictate an oral report, a story, or answers to questions with the Livescribe. As the student listens to the recording, he will be able to make changes in order to improve their writing. They may even use it to summarize what has been read and share the information with a student who was absent the previous day.
Students will use the pen as voice recording devices that can capture every word during an instruction. The recording may be saved to a computer which would allow students to use the information as a tutoring session. They can even send the information to their home computer to replay it once again. This process can even be utilized during vacations as students review vocabulary, math processes, writing instruction, or concepts in science and social studies. This pen may help to prevent students from falling behind. A student will be able to learn more effectively and achieve greater progress.
Students will use the pen to record themselves as they answer comprehension questions while reading. Discussion about the text may also be recorded and listened to at a later date to revise information. We will also use the Smartpens during math practice. This will allow me to hear if the students understood what was taught. They will even be able to ask their own question privately. These pens are the next best thing to a tutor!
 

Benefits to my students

The Livescribe Echo Smartpen is an extremely user-friendly device which can convert into a study tool. It can enhance my student’s learning potential. When I am not available, the student can retrieve, replay and listen to recordings, a feature which can significantly impact the student’s ability to learn. We can record information or an oral reading. By listening to their own recordings, each student may improve their fluency, their written work upon hearing what they wrote, and develop their vocabulary while learning definitions. It is even possible to tap on an English word and get an instant translation. The student may even hear the proper pronunciation. As we work through complicated text, students can work individually, or in small groups and record their discussions, answers to questions, or thought processes while I am working with another group or another individual. When I have a free moment I can listen to their recording to hear if their thinking and/or discussions are "on target" or if I need to correct any misunderstandings. The benefits of implementing a Livescribe Echo Smartpen with my students are infinite!  

Budget Narrative

I service many students in different grade levels as the English Language Learner Resource Teacher. Last year I helped over one hundred students with reading, writing and math. I shared my resources with Kindergarten through fifth grade teachers. The Livescribe Smartpen will help my current students as well as future students immensely. Supporting this request will help several hundred students over many years. Thank you for considering this request.
