Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 90

The goal of the grant was to utilize technology that is available to students with the use of an iPad mini throughout the day. Not only did the students learn the many skills to prepare them for the next grade, but they incorporated the technological skills necessary to produce innovative thinkers. With the use of the many possible applications, practicing different skills took on a new look and became more enticing to my students. All students had access to the iPad mini as I traveled from group to group and classroom to classroom. They read and listened to books, which helped with their comprehension and their fluency. I videotaped students as they acted using Readers’ Theater. This way they were able to see how they improved or what they needed to improve. Students used apps such as Kahoot and Class Kick. These apps allowed me to view the students’ answers immediately, so I could revise their thinking. Students used the device to research a topic, create a video report and present it to the group or their entire class. As for math, students utilized apps for addition facts, subtraction facts, multiplication facts and other math skills. This allowed them to study any skill or get a tutorial and fill any gap in their learning that might exist. The possibilities continue!

What will be done with my students

At this moment, I service over thirty students and each one would have access to the iPad mini as I travel from group to group and classroom to classroom. The students would be extremely engaged and motivated if we used an interactive learning device. In order to become proficient in the many skills that are taught and reinforced in my groups, each student would have an opportunity to utilize the iPad mini in a variety of ways. They would be able to read and listen to books, which would help with comprehension and fluency. They would be able to use apps, set goals for themselves and track their own progress. This iPad may be used in groups enabling them to converse about what they have read which would strengthen their communication skills. The extra reading and conversation would increase their vocabulary too. Students would be able to operate their own video recorder to create a trailer for their favorite story or a become the main character and explain what happened after the story ended. Students can research a topic, create a video report and present it to the group or their entire class. They might even use the iPad to practice and improve their presentation. As for math, students would utilize apps for addition facts, subtraction facts, multiplication facts and other math skills. Having the iPad mini would allow more students to manipulate the numbers and interact with the process. With the use of Educreations, students would learn from other teachers, students, and even their peers. They would create their own videos about math concepts while cementing their thoughts and ideas. This would allow them to study any skill, get a tutorial and fill any gap in their learning that might exist. There are over 275,000 apps in the App Store, so the possibilities are endless!

Benefits to my students

My groups consist of English Language Learners and students who have had challenges learning in the usual manner. Many of my students do not have access to technology at home, so school is where they are trained to utilize technology. With the use of the iPad mini the students throughout the school would be able to learn and practice skills that will be necessary for them to be successful students. Once they accomplish the skills, they will create products to share with others and feel like academic stars! This grant will benefit the students in a variety of ways. The iPad mini will motivate the students to work harder and achieve more. They are interactive and deliver information through auditory, visual, and kinesthetic modalities. The academic gains in reading, math, writing, science, and social studies will be immense!

Budget Narrative

I am servicing many students throughout the school. As the year progresses, I know there will be even more, so the impact of the grant will be far reaching. The students will gain academic skills, be motivated to learn more, and will become teachers in their own classroom with the utilization of the many apps. The iPad mini will be used for many years affecting hundreds of students. Thank you in advance for considering this grant.
