I am proposing funding to help purchase tubano drums to start building a World Music Drumming program. The World Music Drumming program not only helps students develop basic and complex music skills but also encourages communication, teamwork, discipline and respect. World Music Drumming will truly facilitate learning many music and non-music skills in the music classroom.

The grant request is asking for funds to help us buy 9 tubano drums to start building our drum circle. Although 9 drums are only a third of the drums needed for the largest classes, this will create a great start to the program.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 1050

The goal of this project was to bring the World Drumming Curriculum and a group drum circle to the students at Golden Terrace Elementary School. During this project, students were applying musical and non-musical skills to drumming, communication skills, discipline and respect, and most of all a love of music. The Outcome and results were exactly what I was hoping from this project. Students absolutely were taken by the drum process and the World Drumming Curriculum. Students were able to gain more musical skills in the few months of drumming then what I can usually accomplish during the same time without drumming. Their internal beat and being able to feel the music also improved. Students were also much better behaved in class because they knew drumming was a privilege and they loved having the privilege to drum. These drums will be an asset for many years to come in the Golden Terrace music program. I hope to extend this curriculum and group drumming into my future concerts so that we can share the students’ enthusiasm for music and drumming with the community and their parents. As the largest elementary school in the county, these drums with help many of my students. Thank you again for such a wonderful gift to our music program.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I am proposing funding to help purchase tubano drums to start building a World Music Drumming program. The World Music Drumming program not only helps students develop basic and complex music skills but also encourages communication, teamwork, discipline and respect. World Music Drumming will truly facilitate learning many music and non-music skills in the music classroom.

The grant request is asking for funds to help us buy 9 tubano drums to start building our drum circle. Although 9 drums are only a third of the drums needed for the largest classes, this will create a great start to the program.

What will be done with my students

With the funding from this grant, group drumming will become a permanent part of the music program at Golden Terrace Elementary. Using the drums in combination with the World Music Drumming Curriculum, students will participate in group drumming as a regular part in their music classes. Through drumming, students will be able to apply the music skills they have learned in class to instrumental playing that interest them. Students will be learning, playing and recreating authentic songs from African and Afro-Cuban cultures, as well as creating their own rhythms and ensembles through both improvisation and the use of complementary rhythms.

Benefits to my students

The World Music Drumming program will bring music to life for these students. Golden Terrace Elementary is a Title 1 school and many of these students do not see how music is an important part of their lives. A drum circle will help them not only learn important music skills but also become life long learners in music and the other arts.

Golden Terrace Elementary is the largest elementary school in the county at over 1,000 students. So it will not just benefit the students this year but the many students that walk through the music classroom for years to come.

Budget Narrative
