The students are still engaged and enjoying the books Island Walk Tropical Swing funded! Staying physically fit and eating right are important concepts. I am very impressed at the non-fiction materials our students enjoy reading.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The students will have up to date books on sports that they are interested in playing : from tennis to soccer and even Latin Dance. We will also pair some current texts on food and nutrition. Reading levels vary from early reading level through 5th grade level.

What will be done with my students

These books will be used in media lessons and showcased in the media center. Titles focus various popular sports as well as nutrition. We don't have many girls involved in team sports outside of school, so I also chose some books focusing on girls in sports. Latin Dance is another that I thought would interest our girls as we have a very high population of Hispanic students. The posted image shows a P.E. class learning to dance. I will use these books to help students do research and write commercials for them to feature on our morning news show.

Benefits to my students

Ideally, this selection of books will support the students' interest in sports , general health and fitness. It also will improve the student's literacy and ability to read informational texts.

We will order the books through Perma-Bound and add library processing for barcoding and call numbers (.44 per book.)
