My students are extremely motivated to read due to this interesting device. Not only has their comprehension and fluency increased, but they are so excited to read and communicate with me in private. The amount of confidence has increased tremendously. They are highly engaged and focused throughout the lesson. I am able to differentiate instruction to their various needs to become a skilled reader.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to improve my students comprehension, accuracy, appropriate rate, and reading expression as well as gather information about reading strengths and weaknesses in a non-threatening environment.

What will be done with my students

The Whisperphone –Select is a tool that will help monitor and model word production during guided reading activities. With the turn of the dial, students and teachers can discreetly communicate. This will motivate reluctant readers who normally feel inadequate to engage in reading activities. What a great way to provide verbal feedback, praise, and guidance in a private unintimidating way! The Whisperphone- Select will also be used in paired and triad reading teams.

Benefits to my students

The Whisperphone-Select will improve reading accuracy, accuracy rate, and expression. Reluctant readers will feel confident to read aloud while listening to themselves. I will learn the reading strategies being used to decipher text and discuss specific reading needs privately.
