Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 18

This year my Kindergarten class (18 students) at Mike Davis Elementary School was awarded a grant which allowed us to obtain licenses for both Raz-kids and Samson’s classroom.  Raz-kids is a leveled reading program which has three steps for each book.  First, the students had to listen to a book.  Next, it was their turn to read the book.  If there were words they were unsure of, they could select the word and it would read it to them.  Last, they were given a comprehension test, which asked them 5 questions about the story they read.  The whole test is read to them as well.  The end of year reading requirement for Kindergarten is to be reading on a Level C.  In our class, 15 out of the 18 students are now reading on a Level C or higher.  This was also possible thanks to Samson’s Classroom.  Samson’s Classroom is a sight word based program with 5 different activities using a list of sight words.  First, it shows the word and uses it in a sentence.  Next, they are to build the sight word as it is spelled to them.  Then, they have to select the word from the screen showing a variety of words.  After that, they are to spell the word on their own without help.  Lastly, they have to select the correct sight word to complete the sentence.  The end of year expectation for kindergarten sight words is 40 words.  As a result of using this program, we have 17 out of 18 students who have 40 or more sight words and 8 out of 18 who have 100 or more sight words.  The best part of both of these programs is, that my students can continue to use them over the summer as well!  We truly appreciate everyone involved with awarding us this grant! Thank you so much for your support!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To provide kindergarten students with fun and engaging computer based programs focusing on sight words and reading/comprehension for individual student levels.

What will be done with my students

Today, Kindergarten students are required to both read and spell their sight words. In order to truly learn these new skills students need independent practice. For my kindergarten students, this independent practice takes place during our Daily Five center rotations. During this block of time, my students will be able to review and master these skills by using the computer based technology of Samsons Classroom and Raz-Kids. This technology will provide students with a variety of different experiences throughout the program to learn to both read and spell sight words. They will then be able to take their new sight words they are learning and apply them when reading stories in Raz-Kids. Raz-Kids is a great follow up, because the program first reads the story to the student, then the student will read the story and finally they will have to answer questions about the story they have read.

Benefits to my students

While in Daily Five center rotations, kindergarten students will need to be actively engaged in a small group setting, including independent computer based learning. This program will highly benefit our ELL (second language learners large majority of students) student population with its engaging reinforcement of sight word practice, using the spelling component that will help students with their writing, and reading instruction which will improve their comprehension. All of these skills are taught in the regular classroom setting and Samsons Classroom and Raz-Kids will provide them with positive reinforcement of what was taught.

Budget Narrative

Both of these programs allow for a full 1 year license. Students will be able to access the programs from home and even during the summer. Raz-Kids also has a free app allowing access on all devices.
