Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 60

The impact this has made on my students cannot be put into words. It has made them rethink how they view things and create things.  It has given them an outlet of creativity that they never imagined they had!  My girls have a spark in their eyes now when we talk about science and STEM that I did not see before, and my boys are even more into science than ever before.  Thank you again for impacting us in such a HUGE way.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project STEM-ulate Our Learning through K'Nex is to inspire, creativity and imagination through the use of K'Nex building sets to teach the components of STEM by incorporating an inquiry-based hands-on approach to learning.

What will be done with my students

2nd grade students will be introduced to K'Nex ( a science and Math building set where students connect different parts to build structures) through the use of inquiry open-ended questions and learning goals. They will use the sets to explore and ask their own questions and explore different ways to search for various answers. Working collaboratively, students will be able to connect with each aspect of STEM. Science aspects of Simple Machines will be explored by students constructing different types of simple machines. Newton's Laws of Motion will be introduced by using the Structures and Bridges sets. Technology will be incorporated through the use of students using iPads to demonstrate their thinking an learning through the use of an app called "Show Me". Math will be incorporated with the Building set where students can build line segments, rays, polygons, and octagons as well as many different math concepts that will come to life. Through K'Nex students will use the engineering aspect to begin to use coding to make their machines come to life.

Benefits to my students

1. Foster creativity and imagination
2. Motivation to learn science and compete in a global society.
3. Stimulates learning through inquiry
4. Able to reflect on learning
5. Actively involved and engaged
6. Foster collaboration
7. Aligned to National Science Standards
8. Hands-on and FUN

Budget Narrative

The budget includes enough materials for 3 2nd grade classes to rotate throughout the year. The iPad is a refurbished apple certified iPad that will be used for students to "Show" their thinking in an authentic way.
