My students at Lake Trafford Elementary are part of the Title 1 Program in which 98% of the students receive free lunch. My students fall within the poverty range but are bright and enthusiastic.I want to same opportunities for them that other students receive. My goal is to incorporate STEM projects for these students throughout the day with the use of iPads. With schools falling behind in Math and Science education and companies unable to find enough qualified professionals to fill jobs in science and technology, pushing STEM in my 2nd grade classroom is more important than ever. With the help of iPads and a myriad of great educational applications my students will not only get interested in STEM education but will get hooked on STEM. With the use of the one iPad I purchased has opened a new world to my students and has made me a more effective teacher by putting the spark back into my teaching. Imagine what can happen with more iPads for students to use every, all day. Each day my students and I learn and explore together as the standards are being meet for my diverse population of students. Using iPads for STEM is designed to make learning in the classroom a more enjoyable and educational experience for my students and me the teacher. It's a new way to have fun while learning as we also incorporate rigor in the curriculum as we meet the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).While the iPads will be incorporated all day with reading and writing, special emphasis will on our Science and Math to partner with technology. My goal is to provide STEM activities to equip my students to compete in the global society with the necessary tools to prepare them for the 21st Century.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 60

The impact these iPads have made on my students can hardly be expressed in words!  For my students to be able to come to school and know that they have the ability to use iPads everyday all day to help them with STEM projects has raised the bar in my classroom! We are considered the "COOL" classroom  and we try to share our learning with others as often as we can! My class has totally embraced the concepts of STEM and we are "hooked" on science.  They can't wait to write in their electronic portolios at the end of the day or video a science project to explain their thinking to add to their electronic portfolio and share it at the end of the day. Not only has it excited my kids but it has also excited me and made me a better teacher. The iPads  has also made science and reading interactive and fun so that our Second language learner no longer feel left out and can also participate. The biggest advantage is that these iPads have helped to to equip my students to understand the need to grasp the concepts of STEM education and how important it is for them to be ready to compete in the global society. So, we now may be preparing a new generation of engineers and scientists from my classroom.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My students at Lake Trafford Elementary are part of the Title 1 Program in which 98% of the students receive free lunch. My students fall within the poverty range but are bright and enthusiastic.I want to same opportunities for them that other students receive. My goal is to incorporate STEM projects for these students throughout the day with the use of iPads. With the help of iPads and a myriad of great educational applications my students will not only get interested in STEM education but will get hooked on STEM. What will be done with my students

Throughout the day the iPads will provide an enormous amount of possibilities for engaging STEM projects for my students such as gather and compare data, conduct research, record photos, video and audio, explore multimedia by creating their own samples expressing their learning and understanding of science concepts in a unique and engaging way. Not only will the iPads be use for science but, the iPad's will be used directly by the students throughout the day as we make transitions from each subject area but more importantly it will allow them to integrate the subjects. The iPads will be used all day every day. During reading students will be able to read interactive stories, create book reports through the use of applications such as Kids Book Report, take charge of their own reading goals, and respond to discussions by having the iPad's connected to the whiteboard. No students' voice or opinion goes unheard or unseen. One of the biggest benefits of having an iPad in the classroom is the ability to boost English Language Learners by giving them access to applications that help develop language skills that are easy for them to interact with. When it comes to reading, it is one of the hardest areas to spark student interest especially for those who struggle. iPads will open a whole new world of reading for all students.
For language arts/writing students will be able to create a digital version of their stories with illustrations that make them come to life. They will be used in order to boost students writing skills by being the editors and publishers of our classroom website blog. Students will have the opportunity to write in a variety of ways.
In math, students will be able to help struggling learners practice math facts in a more interactive and engaging way by introducing them to games that are fun and educational. When learning about area and perimeter students will be able to view an array of real life blueprints while trying to design their own, then take that and create a 3-D replica of their produce. Students will take responsibility of their own learning iespecially with STEM, students will take on the role of scientists by documenting get the scientific process with their iPads each step of the way. They will question and formulate their hypothesis, use the iPad to research their hypothesis, then video their experiment and document the complete process thus tracking their educational progress and their thinking and learning and finally documenting their results using an app that's called "Show Me" where they draw and explain their thinking. Students will become the scientists and I will take on the role of facilitator.
