The goal of this project is to have 100% engagement of all my students in our school-wide initiative of reading the Sunshine State Young Readers Award Books (SSYRA) and completing an iMovie on each book. This will be the second year of this project. Last year was a huge success!

LAFS.3.RL.2.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, distinguishing literal from nonliteral language.

LAFS.3.RL.2.5 Refer to parts of stories, dramas, and poems when writing or speaking about a text, using terms such as chapter, scene, and stanza; describe how each successive part builds on earlier scenes.

LAFS.3.RL.4.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, at the high end of grades 2-3 complexity band independently and proficiently

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

This year's grant was a huge success!  My students were actively engaged in reading and creating their iMovies, demonstrating higher level comprehension of the books they read.  The expectation was that students read Sunshine State Young Readers, either by themselves, or listening to the book.  All 20 of my students read, or had read to them, at least three Sunshine State Young Reader Books.  My class lexile average increased 117 points this year and my class read over 10,643,800 words!!

The students were so proud to share their completed iMovies at our Red Carpet Event for their parents, and for all the special people around our campus that help them every day.  Our event was started with a walk on the Red Carpet and the presentation of their favorite iMovie that they created.  It was a fantastic event!!  Please see the links below for some incredible student iMovies.  Thank you for your support this year!

What will be done with my students

Throughout the school year, students will read the various genres and challenging texts of the Sunshine State Young Readers books (SSYRA). Due to the complexity of some of these books, some students, such as ELL students or reluctant readers, do not participate in our school wide initiatives which encourage reading the SSYRA books. One way to encourage all my students to participate is by allowing them to listen to the stories through the use of the website www.audiobooks.com and have the students follow along with their own copy of the story. Students will be allowed to use an iPad with the AudioBooks App so that they may listen to the SSYRA book. Once the student has completed the book, they will demonstrate their comprehension of the story by completing a Reading Counts comprehension test, and they will complete a written book review of the story. Finally, the students will create an iMovie of the book. The students will then celebrate their success with an “iMovie Red Carpet Event”, inviting their families and administrators from our school. Benefits to my students

This will benefit all of my students, especially my ELL students and my reluctant readers. Students will be able to listen to the story on an iPad and follow along with the book. It will increase their reading comprehension, increase their vocabulary, and increase their confidence with Reading. Last year, it was incredible to watch the students as they presented their iMovies to their families and staff. They felt so proud of their accomplishments! I'm looking to recreate that with my new group of students for the 2016-2017 school year.

In the digital age that students live in, the use of the iPad, along with audiobooks.com, will engage students and encourage readers to interact with what they have read. Also, by recreating what they have read and making an iMovie, students are demonstrating higher level thinking skills which will transfer to all subject areas.

Budget Narrative

The request is for one iPad Mini and a protective otter box which the students will be able to “check-out” to use in classroom. The iPad is necessary to create the iMovie. It can also be used throughout all subject areas in the classroom. Also, an 8 month subscription to Audiobooks.com at $14.95 per month will be purchased to allow students to listen to the stories as they follow along with the Sunshine State Young Readers Award book. Finally, celebration materials will be purchased for the “iMovie Red Carpet” event. Shipping is free when ordering with Amazon.
