Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 253

The fulfillment of this grant afforded us the opportunity to purchase 180 chapter books for our 3rd grade students. Teachers have been checking out the class sets of books and reading together. Reading entire books as a class has exposed students to the joy literature can bring. With the teacher there to guide the students with deeper thinking and collaboration during their reading, these books bring an opportunity for our students to succeed in becoming critical thinkers while reading. The books have opened a new opportunity to our third grade teachers as they have never had class sets of books before. Teachers are collaborating with each other about how the book is supporting standards in their classroom. The bins of books are rarely making it back to the media center. Teachers are simply telling the media specialist to change the checkout name from one teacher to the next. This resource will last for years within our school and will serve many students as access to great literature through close reading.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant is to provide our 3rd grade teachers access to rich literature for their entire classrooms. If these class sets of 30 chapter books and teacher guide per book were provided, our teachers could teach literature through novel studies.

What will be done with my students

Currently students are reading chapters or sections of great literature in their Core Reading Text books. While these experiences are great and would continue, I would love for our students to experience entire pieces of literature. With this grant, teachers will have access to 30 copies of the same text, so that every student in the class can hold and read the same text at the same time. When the text is completed in one room, it can be checked out again in another classroom. It would become a school-wide resource used by 6 third grade classrooms of approximately 120 students each year.

Benefits to my students

Reading an entire book as a class will expose students to the joy literature can bring. With the teacher there to guide the students with deeper thinking and collaboration during their reading, these books will bring an opportunity for our students to succeed in becoming critical thinkers while reading.

Budget Narrative

Each of the books selected have lessons provided in CPALMS which have been vetted and aligned to our Florida Standards or come with a teacher guide called a Novel-Tie. The books would be a teaching tool for mastering the standards at the 3rd grade level. Books have been selected based on appropriate 3rd grade reading levels.
