Our goal is to celebrate our annual Literacy Week, with parents and students, in a memorable way.
Parent involvement in a child's early education is consistently found to be positively associated with a child's academic performance (Hara & Burke, 1998; Hill & Craft, 2003; Marcon, 1999; Stevenson & Baker, 1987).
Each year a theme is selected to celebrate literacy for a week long extravaganza. With daily activities including a Literacy Night in which parents join in the fun, the week is always unforgettable. This year we are requesting funds to help with signage and Dr. Seuss theme related literacy activities.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 590

Literacy Night at Tommie Barfield began with families arriving in Dr. Seuss flare and enjoying pizza and salad together while Seuss-like music put a tap in their toes. Shortly after arrival, students surprised those in attendance by starting a flash mob performance in the center of the cafeteria. A theater in the round was created, spotlighting songs from Seussical the Musical. With a stunned audience, enjoying one song after another, the students recited poems and sang their hearts out. As the music came to it's grand finale, the Cat in the Hat made a surprise appearance and graciously offered to take photos with students. The literacy centers began and families worked together to improve their speaking, listening, word building, story building and comprehension skills. Literacy Night 2018 was one to remember. Many of the station activities and props were provided by this grant. We are sincerely greatful for the generosity of Champions for Learning and Suncoast Credit Union.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

Each day of the week has a special literacy based activity attached to it. We celebrate reading in many ways including, inviting guest readers from our community, counting how many minutes we have read collectively as a school, dressing up as book characters, decorating classroom doors like book covers, and so much more! Students are encouraged to read for extra time during this week. Each class dedicates special time to reading and writing in special ways. Sometimes reading and writing together and sometimes independently. It is a special week in which we celebrate our students ability to read and write.

Benefits to my students

When parents are involved in education, the research proves that our student achievement increases. This week and family night event will allow for fun family collaboration. Students will work to study Dr. Seuss as they prepare for activities throughout the week. Also, parents will have the opportunity to get involved in Literacy Night where we play literacy games that are selected based on data based needs. Parents play the games with teacher support and are able to replay many of the activities at home to support literacy.

Budget Narrative

These items will help significantly with making this year's literacy week a memorable one. The works of Dr. Seuss will be spotlighted throughout the week and especially on Literacy Night.
