The goals for this project are to provide grade 6 - 8 students at Corkscrew Middle School with educational, fun and engaging activities that will develop their creative and critical thinking skills while doing STEM, both in the immediate classroom and in the After School Program. Students will be introduced to computer coding and robotics by working with the tiny robot Ozobot and also by being introduced to the variety of online programs that teach students to make projects with computer coding. Students will see how coding can be a useful tool that can be used in many applications in school, work and play.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 377

All 6th grade students at CMS (280 students) learned about coding as enrichment activities in Science class.  In addition, Cambridge students in Grades 7 & 8 (97 students) programmed with the Ozobots in their science classes.

Learning coding helped the students practice critical and creative thinking skills in small cooperative groups.  Their problem solving skills were further developed as they programmed the Ozobots to follow specific directions they created.  Students can now appreciate how coding can be a useful tool that can be used in many applications at school and home.

Thank you very much for supporting this valuable learning activity in our CMS classrooms!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goals for this project are to provide grade 6 - 8 students at Corkscrew Middle School with educational, fun and engaging activities that will develop their creative and critical thinking skills while doing STEM, both in the immediate classroom and in the After School Program. Students will be introduced to computer coding and robotics by working with the tiny robot Ozobot and also by being introduced to the variety of online programs that teach students to make projects with computer coding. Students will see how coding can be a useful tool that can be used in many applications in school, work and play.

What will be done with my students

Students in grades 6 - 8 will have the opportunity to learn about computer coding as part of the After School Program 1- 3 days per week. Students in grade 6 will, additionally, learn about coding as enrichment activities in their science classes.
In small groups or independently, students will learn to code and program the Ozobot robot. They will learn how to utilize the Ozobot resources to make connections to academic lessons.
Students will be introduced to the many online resources that will help them learn to code in order to make their own animations, greeting cards, apps, games and stories. Students will be able to continue working on their coding projects at home.

Benefits to my students

Students at CMS will be immersed in the STEM environment as they learn and practice problem solving and critical thinking while learning to program the Ozobot robots. As they learn computer coding, they will plan & design, work cooperatively, experience lots of trial & error, while gaining skills in paying attention to details.

Students will develop basic computer programming skills as well as see real world applications in math and computer science as they make projects on the various online coding websites.

Budget Narrative

The Ozobot Classroom kit includes 18 Ozobots so students in the classroom or in the Afterschool program can either work independently or in small groups. Colorful markers are used in the beginning Ozobot activities. Basic teacher resources are also included in the kit. The many online coding resources that we will be using will be FREE. The public and school library will also be utilized for books about coding in general and coding projects.
