Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 300

My goal to expand our Media Center Makerspaces with Legos, Laser Pegs, and an Osmo Creative set has been very successful and has generated lots of excitement!  Everyday students visiting the library are anxious to build, create, and explore using these creativity inspiring materials.  Working together, students have built an amazing array of buildings, structures, and vehicles, along with some very original creations.  They have played learning games and interacted with innovative technology and animation. These open ended materials continue to excite and challenge students because every time they use them, they can invent something new. Students using our STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) centered makerspaces participate in hands-on learning and apply problem solving skills and strategies that they learn in the classroom. They are having fun while they learn!  I am so very grateful to be able provide these curriculum enriching makerspaces for our students.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to expand our Media Center Makerspaces. A Makerspace is a station or center where students can tinker, create, problem solve, and develop thinking skills as they interact with various building materials, art supplies, critical thinking games, and technology.

What will be done with my students

Students who visit the media center can spend time at stations designated as "Makerspaces". Each space houses a variety of supplies and building materials that encourage creativity and critical thinking. The activities are focused on STEAM, (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math).
As the media specialist, I facilitate activities and guide students as needed. This year I would like to add two new spaces, Legos and Laser Pegs and expand our Osmo technology station.
Classic Lego bricks are an all time favorite that inspire creativity and promote cooperative learning and collaboration. Students will use their imagination to build open ended projects on a previously purchased Lego table or create 3D artwork on a Lego wall.
Laser Pegs is an innovative construction set that combines multi-shaped building pegs with a 3D light board. Students will be able to build and light up their own creations or follow directions to create several amazing models from robots to dragons. Legos and other building blocks can be used along with the Laser Pegs to create even more designs.
Our technology station incorporates interactive technology by pairing an iPad with an Osmo educational gaming system. This year, Osmo has added a creative kit that brings drawings to life. Each item drawn is magically pulled into the screen by a friendly monster. Students create and share animated activities.

Benefits to my students

As educators, we are always seeking ways to get students excited about learning while meeting their individual needs. Although students learn best by doing, the classroom is often limited by the lack of space and time for many types of hands-on activities. Media Center Makerspaces provide a venue for student-led hands-on learning. It's a place where students have creative freedom and can participate in problem solving activities. Students develop critical thinking skills while increasing their interest in STEAM. Makerspaces also provide students a place to unwind and work off stress and develop social skills.

Budget Narrative

The budget is for two new exciting Makerspaces and the materials needed to expand an already existing one. The funds for Legos includes a Classic Large Creative set, figurines, and baseplates. The Laser Peg Sets include a 3D light board, 2 building sets, and adapters. The Osmo kit comes with an interactive drawing board, markers, and new games/activities.
