The goal is to provide students with the opportunity to use StoryboardThat to enhance and showcase their learning while incorporating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math). StoryBoardThat.com is a web-based program featuring an intuitive drag and drop interface and an image rich library enabling students to create digital storyboards that reflect their understanding of the text or concept. I would like to purchase a subscription for the Educational Edition of the software that will allow students to create and share their storyboards and give me the ability to access and assess their work.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 75

Throught the year, students utilized a classroom subscription to StoryboardThat to authentically assess and showcase their mastery of several 7th grade Language Arts Florida Standards.  The web-based program allowed me to incorporate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) into my classroom by allowing students to create digital storyboards to reflect their understanding of a text or concept while challenging them to use their creativity.  Students expressed their enthusiasm for the program and enjoyed engaging in the activities designed to deepened their knowledge.

Attached are just a few excellent examples of students' use of StoryboardThat to present their analysis of plot, theme, summary and characterization that were created over the course of the year.

Thank you so much for supporting and enhancing student achievement!  As a member of the MMS faculty, we are so grateful for the generous donations from members of the community like you!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to provide students with the opportunity to use StoryboardThat to enhance and showcase their learning while incorporating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math). StoryBoardThat.com is a web-based program featuring an intuitive drag and drop interface and an image rich library enabling students to create digital storyboards that reflect their understanding of the text or concept. I would like to purchase a subscription for the Educational Edition of the software that will allow students to create and share their storyboards and give me the ability to access and assess their work.

What will be done with my students

StoryboardThat inspires creativity by allowing students to create digital storyboards to reflect their understanding of a text, concept or skill. Digital storyboards can be used to teach and support the following Language Arts Florida Standards:
- Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text. (LAFS.7.RL.1.2)
- Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how setting shapes the characters or plot). (LAFS.7.RL.1.3)
- Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different characters or narrators in a text (LAFS.7.RL.2.6)
- Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of rhymes and other repetitions of sounds (e.g., alliteration) on a specific verse or stanza of a poem or section of a story or drama (LAFS.7.RL.2.5)

For example, students would use the program to represent scenes from each element of plot (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution) in order to show their analysis of the development of plot.

In addition, when students share their storyboards with the class, they develop presentation skills, which supports the following Language Arts Florida Standards:
- Present claims and findings, emphasizing salient points in a focused, coherent manner with pertinent descriptions, facts, details, and examples; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation. (LAFS.7.SL.2.4)
- Include multimedia components and visual displays in presentations to clarify claims and findings and emphasize salient points. (LAFS.7.SL.2.5)

Benefits to my students

StoryboardThat will allow me as the teacher to assess and reinforce student comprehension of literature with storyboards. The Educator Edition includes a teacher dashboard complete with standards-based lesson plans and graphic organizers for students. The benefit to students is that it incorporates technology and artistic tools, enabling them to use their creativity to practice skills and concepts as they move toward mastery of the standards. In addition, they are creating products that they will present to their peers, which increases engagement and boosts student confidence.

Budget Narrative

The single teacher pricing for 51-100 students will allow all students across three classes to access StoryboardThat for the entire year. There are multiple pricing tiers based on length of time, number of students or school-wide subscriptions, but I chose the one most appropriate for my needs.
