Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 16

The students were able to share their musical talent by singing a variety of songs on two separate occasions.  They really enjoyed the conversations with their "Senior Buddies" and discovered that they actually had ideas and interests that were very much alike.  Due to the generosity of Dolly Bodick, we were able to make two trips to The Chateau.  The students were so excited to see their buddies for a second time.  They were especially excited to go to Music Class each week and share ideas and practice songs with the Music Teacher.  They developed a keen interest in music because the trips gave them a purpose for singing.  A personal touch was making cards for each trip to their "Senior Buddy' from their "Junior Buddy" and giving them a copy of a song from each student that they sang personally to them "FRIENDS FOREVER".   Students and parents remarked what a meaningful relationship students were able to develop and even though they are very young, they still can be a part of their community.

Students made special gifts for their buddies and thanks to our donor's generosity, we were able to make enough for every resident we contacted, including the ones in physical therapy upstairs.

Mrs. Jensen and I truly look forward to collaborating and watching the students grow with their musical talent from the first visit to the second visit.  We were able to develop a close relationship between the students and residents and really enjoyed watching the residents sing along when they recognized a song and the seniors' smiles and the students' smiles were 'priceless'.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students will interact with residents of an extended-care facility to promote awareness of developing an understanding of how to be respectful and responsible to all generations. Students will provide an opportunity to share different types of music with the residents and gives the students an experience to reach out to the community. The Classroom Teacher and the Music Teacher will collaborate and work together to help the students get ready for their visit. They will also encourage the residents to sing along with the students.

What will be done with my students

The classroom teacher will start out by reading an appropriate age-level book which will explain what type of facility this is and who lives there. The classroom teacher and the music teacher will then teach the students what the expectations are for the trip. Students will learn and practice the music with special care to pick songs that the residents might know. This will also expose the students to a different generation of music that they may not have heard. Students will also demonstrate the use of musical instruments to share their knowledge of learning on how to keep time with the music. They will also make a couple of cards to share with the residents so that no one will be left out.and each resident will have one to keep. They will be paired up with a resident and will introduce themselves and also share some of their classwork. Then there will be time to answer any questions the resident may have about school. They will also share that there will be a second trip and they will be pen pals during the year to keep them connnected. Students are also always invited upstairs to rehab to interact with those residents and give another performance. This is especially beneficial to the students to show them that all residents are included and no one is left out just because they are injured or unable to go to the main room.

Benefits to my students

We both feel there is a tremendous benefit for both students and residents to share in this opportunity. It provides a different age perspective for both groups since they do not experience this type of contact here in Florida as families of different ages live too far away. Students will have a better understanding of what it takes to be a good citizen and how all ages can participate in their community. Students have the benefit of learning different genres of music and most especially from a totally different generation. They will be learning songs that most of them have probably never heard before. Students also develop a true friendship with the residents and usually call them their 'buddies'.
The music teacher and classroom teacher really enjoy this great opportunity to collaborate, work, and plan together to provide this learning lesson and experience this outreach to the community.

Budget Narrative

The bus will need to travel to The Moorings which is quite a distance from LOE. A substitute teacher will be needed to cover the music classes which the music teacher is away. Last year we were able to purchase little egg shakers to use as a musical instrument so that every child had them and no one was left out. Depending on the time of the year, students will make some type of craft to give to the residents for them to keep.
