My goal is to use a great resource from Scholastic in my classroom to help support my curriculum. Many articles are specifically focused on the sixth grade world history curriculum and are high interest for the students. Having this resource and the images it includes will bring ancient history to life for all sixth grade students.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 300

As mentioned in my grant request, the Junior Scholastic Magazine would impact more than just the students in my classroom as the magazines were shared with the other sixth grade world history teacher.  Our students used this magazine and the accompanying resources from Scholastic to better understand different perspectives on current events, dig deeper into Egyptian history, understand the Holocaust and how young people helped rescue Jews, and explore what life was like in Communist China and the USSR through living histories among other things.  These experiences the students had were very memorable for them.  After each time we used the magazines in class, students would come up to me for a week afterward asking if they could learn more about the information presented in the articles they read.  The favorite topics were King Tut's tomb at the very beginning of the year, the Holocaust in January, and the living histories in April/May.  While the articles and information presented in the magazines went beyond my curriculum, it was still closely aligned through the skills being taught through each article.  Not only did the magazines come, but I also had access to online resources and videos to help extend the learning beyond the reading.  Both I, and my students, thoroughly enjoyed the time spent using the Junior Scholastic magazines and we are very thankful they were provided to us for this school year!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to use a great resource from Scholastic in my classroom to help support my curriculum. Many articles are specifically focused on the sixth grade world history curriculum and are high interest for the students. Having this resource and the images it includes will bring ancient history to life for all sixth grade students.

What will be done with my students

Students will use this resource to deepen their learning about specific topics in ancient history such as King Tut's tomb, map reading skills, reinforcing geographic themes, and putting current events into an historical perspective. Students will use this resource in small groups and individually to understand why studying history is so important and will supplement language arts curriculum by focusing on being able to cite evidence from the text and determining main idea.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of adding Junior Scholastic to the classrooms at Manatee Middle School is in supporting our curriculum as well as providing a fantastic resource that is high interest for our students and will keep the students strongly engaged in curriculum that can be considered not important by many students. The benefit will also extend beyond sixth grade social studies classrooms and into our seventh and eighth grade social studies classrooms as well. Junior Scholastic supports Civics and American History curriculum very closely as well.
