Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 257

“From Boring to Soaring” was a grant that was awarded to Vineyards Elementary by Champions for Learning.  The goal of this grant was to help teachers take the tradition notebook that students copy notes into and make it into an engaging and interactive experience for students.  This leaning opportunity was offered to teachers as a “Reading Boot Camp” in which they would focus on Pre-Reading, During Reading, and Post Reading Strategies.  Also included were Vocabulary activities to support word acquisition.  Fourteen teachers volunteered their time to meet in bi-weekly sessions prior to the start of the school day.  The environment was established as a model classroom where teachers would be the students.  Texts were read and explored using the reading strategies.  All work and interactions with the texts were captured in the interactive notebook. Teachers learned how to go revisit their work to enhance their craft, just as we expect our students to revisit their learning.  Teachers then took their new knowledge back to the classroom where they implemented the interactive notebook with their students.  As a result, 257 students were provided with a resource to document, monitor, and revisit their learning.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to provide teachers with additional tools and resources to effectively incorporate interactive notebooks into their instructional routine so as to build strategic readers.

What will be done with my students

Notebooks are an essential part to the daily classroom routine. Unfortunately, notebooks often come with the stigma of being dull, uninspired, and lifeless ideas. Interactive notebooks provide a new twist. These notebooks are filled with words, diagrams, flow charts, arrows, and a vast array of other multi-colored note-taking strategies designed to assist students with their ideas, questions, and reactions to texts in a creative fashion.

In order to make the boring notebook of the past come alive and provide an outlet for students to soar to success, our teachers are in need of the opportunity to learn how to make this dream become a reality.

Teachers will meet bi-weekly to create a bank of reading activities to help students develop their reading skills in a fun and engaging manner. By using the materials requested, teachers will design an Interactive Teacher Notebook to serve as a model for student learning. Teachers will also have the opportunity to collaborate with peers as to best practices for this notebook.

Benefits to my students

The Interactive Notebook benefits the needs of both teachers and students. The Interactive Notebook

*is a tool for communication between teacher and student.
*becomes a place for teachers to reflect on the effectiveness of activities and assignments.
*provides a place to locate and draw upon previous learning.
*establishes a cohesiveness to learning by providing a logical flow of learning and ideas.
*serves as a model of how to use and apply reading strategies.
*makes learning fun for both teacher and student.
