Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 38

We have recently completed our 2nd FAI-TO competition of the year on January 24th, 2017. I am pleased to announce that we won both of these math competitions, the first with Slottsstandens Skola of Sweeden and the next one with Vauxhall School of Great Britain. In each of these events we won 5 rounds of competition by completing 10-question challenges on a variety of math concepts that develop computational fluency. Based on the dgree of difficulty and accuracy a student is awarded a Gold, Silver, Bronze or no medal on each challenge. During these week long competitions we were able to earn over 250 medals as a school.

I have also attached a screen shot of our current medal count for this school year. We use the Mangahigh.com website to complete coursework in all of our math courses at Naples TAPP. On average, a student will earn 160 medals as part of the reguirements for earning a math credit.

The website was also very effective in preparing our students for the high school math graduation test (PERT). All three students that needed to pass this test to be eligible for a high school diploma used the website on a regular basis. These students had failed this test in the past on several ocasions, but were able to pass the test during our Fall testing window.

Your generous donation to fund our access to this website has been truly impactful. We thank you for providing us with this resource, it is a success!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To provide the opportunity for students to compete in on-line math competitions through Mangahigh.com this school year and utilize the website throughout the teen pregnancy program.

What will be done with my students

Students will again compete in math competitions through the Mangahigh.com website. Since 2011 the Naples TAPP (Teen Age Parent Program) has competed against schools in North America and Europe compiling a 14-3 win/loss record. The curriculum for the competitions is specifically geared to sharpen their computational fluency and accuracy. Students also use this website throughout the school year to complete assignments in their math courses. Please visit Mangahigh.com to view the website and examine its features.

Benefits to my students

Since the introduction of Mangahigh.com into the math program at Naples TAPP the students have achieved tremendous success in the math test requirement for high school graduation. Students entering the program having failed the graduation test at least once have made ample learning gains to pass the math test for graduation. It is the students' favorite website and the math competitions called "FAI-TO's" are extremely engaging. During the 2015-16 school year students earned 4492 Bronze medals, 1345 Silver medals and 1598 Gold medals on the Mangahigh.com challenges. These medals represent over 180,000 math questions answered correctly with levels of difficulty ranging from easy to extreme. Gold medals are awarded by answering 10 extreme level questions correctly in a row. A typical student will earn roughly 200 medals during the school year. The social benefit of a teenage parent earning a high school diploma has been well documented-this is a math website that has worked well for the past five years at Naples TAPP and is requesting financial assistance.

Budget Narrative

The annual subscription cost for 75 students is $760. In the first and second years of implementation (2011 and 2012) the site had free access. The site was enhanced and an fee was assessed to receive full access. This cost was paid by teacher financing. Since the program has been such a big success with the students and has a proven track record, I feel that it is a worthwhile grant request.
