Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 12

What a rewarding and successful year at the Barron Collier High School L.I.F.E. Program!  Our twelve student interns have gained a variety of new job skills in the hotel/hospitality business including learning how to set and arrange dining tables in a restaurant, gather guest trays and other Room Service skills, polish and roll silverware, culinary food preparation with "plating up for hundreds of special guests" and clerical duties for the Human Resources Department.

The student interns have received many compliments from co-workers, supervisors and guests regarding their daily practices of demonstrating outstanding work habits and positive attitudes in the job.

We are grateful to the Perna-Rose Foundation and Champions for Learning for their assistance in implementing the L.I.F.E. Bucks Positive Behavior Work Incentive Program for our students during the 2016-2017 school year.  The resulting Target shopping trip reward reinforces the concept to students that demonstrating consistent, excellent work skills will increase their likelihood of obtaining and maintaining sustainable employment and bringing purpose and joy to their lives.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of the L.I.F.E. Program employment training model is to provide students, with learning challenges, concrete, supportive work experiences in a community based setting to increase each student’s likelihood of obtaining and maintaining sustainable employment in later life.

What will be done with my students

Businesses and employers value employees who demonstrate an excellent work ethic. An important emphasis of the L.I.F.E. Program is assisting students in developing the job skills needed to be a productive team worker. Each work day, students will earn “L.I.F.E.Bucks” for successfully completing morning and afternoon assigned job tasks incorporating essential job skills. These skills include demonstrating a positive work attitude, following employer directions or instructions, requesting clarification as needed, completing a job task in a timely manner, dressing appropriately for the task, and contacting your employer if late or absent from work. Since this is an unpaid internship work experience, students are rewarded for their daily demonstration of positive work behaviors through a Positive Behavior Incentive system using the L.I.F.E Bucks. The students are working towards a shopping trip to Target as students accumulate their “Bucks”. Students are rewarded for all their hard work as the L.I.F.E. Bucks become real money for their shopping trip which occurs in December and May.

Benefits to my students

Typically, many of the students in this Program have limited opportunities for job success after graduating from high school. By having the opportunity to participate in a community work-based program, students can experience a variety of career areas where they can enjoy their work and be successful, with assistance as needed. In addition, the L.I.F.E. Program provides students with the opportunity to develop confidence, social and communication skills, work ethics, functional academic skills, teamwork, and effective employability skills to become productive valued citizens. The L.I.F.E Bucks Positive Behavior Incentive system and resulting Target shopping trip reinforces the concept that demonstrating consistent, excellent work skills will increase your likelihood of obtaining and maintaining sustainable employment.
